Gordon McInally, incoming Rotary International President revealed the 2023-24 presidential theme, Create Hope in the World.
At the core of this theme is the promotion of peace in troubled nations, support for communities affected by conflicts, and the continuation of impactful initiatives started by past leaders.
Building on Rotary's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, the theme emphasizes the importance of maintaining continuity while embracing innovation. By upholding initiatives like Empowering Girls and prioritizing the fight against polio, Rotary plays a vital role in creating lasting change.
Additionally, Rotary recognizes the significance of addressing mental health challenges, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. By offering hope and support, Rotary aims to improve mental health services and break the stigma surrounding seeking assistance.
Together, Rotary members have the power to create a more hopeful and peaceful world. Let us unite, embrace this theme, and work towards a future filled with hope, opportunity, and positive change.
As we wrap up another fantastic Rotary year, we're filled with joy and gratitude. It has been a truly remarkable journey, marked by impactful projects and inspiring encounters. We've had the privilege of meeting incredible people who have inspired us along the way.
Among the many highlights, one achievement shines brightly: receiving the District Governor Award for our East Africa Medical Program. For over 25 years, the Rotary Club of Edmonton Mayfield has been providing training and supplies to medical professionals in East Africa, focusing on Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, and Burundi.
This program, spearheaded by Dr. Zaheer Lakhani, has made a tremendous impact. We've funded nearly 75 trips for medical professionals and supported over 25 students through our Buski-Lakhani Bursaries. Collaborating with other Rotary Clubs and like-minded organizations, such as HCU, has been instrumental in our success.
The East Africa Medical Program has become a cornerstone of our club, and we're excited to continue it in the future. Together, we've embraced the African adage: "To travel fast, you can go alone, but to travel far, you must go together."
As we close this chapter, we celebrate the friendships we've formed, the lives we've touched, and the unity we've fostered. Thank you to all our members, partners, and supporters for an unforgettable year. Here's to the future and the many more lives we'll impact together!
For our final event of the year, our club had a blast hosting a sizzling BBQ for over 200 amazing students and staff at Brightview School! What a fantastic way to spread joy and make memories together.

During our Changeover Dinner we had a 'happy leaving' for our friend Derek Jay, who has stepped away from active duty in the club. Derek will be staying on as an Honorary Member and will help us to fulfill the Derek Jay Legacy Project.
We wanted to honor Derek, as he concludes a decade of continuous work and unwavering dedication. We are immensely grateful for his tireless service, and he will always be cherished as a memorable part of our club.
From his time in the Philippines to settling in Qualicum Beach, Derek's journey has been marked by resilience and a commitment to making a positive impact.
Recognizing his outstanding dedication, the Rotary Club of Qualicum Beach, Sunrise welcomed Derek into their esteemed ranks, setting the stage for his inspiring Rotary journey. His unique contributions, including introducing a Funeral Director with the classification of a "One way travel agent," fostered camaraderie and enriched the fabric of our club.
In March 2013, our Club met Derek and invited to join us. Now, after a decade of continuous work and unwavering dedication, Derek is entering a well-deserved retirement. We take this moment to express our deepest appreciation for his invaluable contributions, unwavering spirit, and the lasting impact he has made within our club.
Derek, you will be deeply missed, but your legacy of service will continue to inspire us all. Wishing you a fulfilling and joyous retirement, filled with wonderful memories and new adventures.
