Member Profile Dr Zaheer Lakhani
As a young boy growing up in Kampala, Uganda, Zaheer Lakhani frequently came across young medical students at Makerere University rushing from campus residence to Mulago teaching hospital. In spotless white coats, stethoscopes in hand, they unknowingly inspired him. That inspiration led him to a career in Cardiology. After immigrating to Canada, Zaheer wanted to give back, which eventually led him to the Rotary Club of Edmonton Mayfield and to establish our East Africa Medical Program, in which the club supports travel for medical professionals and students to travel between Alberta and East Africa and provide training to local doctors and students. This program is now in its 26th year and has funded over 100 trips between the two regions.
Recently Zaheer has had an opportunity to travel the province in support of his wife, Her Honour Salma Lakhani, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. During his travels, Zaheer doesn’t miss an opportunity to share the good work of Rotary, or to bring back new ideas to the club on what other organizations are doing.
Fun Fact:
As a newly minted first-time grandfather to Sufyan Lakhani Velji born January 7 2023, Zaheer is busy learning to play Raffi songs on his Ukelele to impress this welcome addition to the family. His favourite? Baby Beluga of course!!
Communications Update
How can we tell our story? The communications team is working on a plan but we need your help. If you are working on a project or event or if you want to share your Rotary journey with others, we want to hear about it. And if you attend an event, take pictures or videos and send to RCEMstories@gmail.com. We will use these for social media and bulletin posts.
Are you an established professional who wants to make positive changes in your community and the world? Our club members are dedicated people who share a passion for community service and friendship.
We invite you to join us at an upcoming meeting.
