• January 4th luncheon meeting will include a presentation by Paul Dusseault of Edmonton Riverview sharing about their project in Ecuador. Ted will also bring forth a motion to provide mental health support at Brightview School. The meeting will be held at Chateau Nova Yellowhead in the 3rd Fl Boardroom and by Zoom.

As Rachel Poelzer celebrates  over 10 years involved with Rotary, let’s take a moment to learn what one Rotary journey could look like! 

Rachel was first introduced to Rotary in high school, when she was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Edmonton Mayfield to attend the four-day Rotary Youth Leadership Experience (RYLE). After attending, she joined her high school’s Interact club, where she worked with fellow students to plan and execute local and global projects. 

Rotary’s six (now seven) areas of focus allowed her to explore various avenues and forms of service, which was invaluable to her as a young person just learning about the world and finding her niche. 

Rachel continued her Rotary journey beyond high school. She served as an executive of the University of Alberta Rotaract Club while completing a BA in Criminology, as well as served in various roles on District 5370 committees responsible for planning and executing district-wide youth events (RYLE, RYLA, and RYPEN). It was in these roles that Rachel solidified her connection to Rotary; the intrinsic reward of serving the community, together with the fellowship, teamwork, innovation, cultural learning, and personal/professional development made it a very worthwhile extracurricular. Some of her favorite projects included a week-long fundraising volunteer-a-thon, and helping to pilot an LGBTQ+ session for RYPEN participants. 

After five years of sponsorship and mentorship from the Rotary Club of Edmonton Mayfield throughout Interact and Rotaract, they warmly welcomed Rachel into their ranks as a Rotarian. In her five years of Rotary membership, she has prepared for the LSAT, graduated law school, articled, and just recently celebrated becoming a lawyer and starting her career as a Crown Prosecutor. Rachel appreciates how much the Mayfield Club supported her through school by tailoring her Rotary responsibilities according to her increased workload. Her experiences through Rotary have prepared her to take on her new vocation as an active, well-rounded, and motivated community member.
