On January 4, 2023, we were delighted and moved by a presentation from Paul Dusseault, Rotary Club of Edmonton Riverview on their recent project in Ecuador. With more than 2 years of planning, funding from Rotary Clubs, Rotary District 5370 and a Rotary International World Grant and a reliable partner club from Ecuador, the Club Rotario Tomebamba; a large contingent of Canadian volunteers, medical personnel and supplies traveled to Cuenca, Ecuador in September 2022 to perform much needed cataract surgeries. From September 19-23, 2022, 79 surgeries were performed by the team and with another 70 that had been performed in the Spring, now 149 natives of Ecuador can see again!! What is more exciting is that local medical professionals in Cuenca have been engaged to learn how to do the surgeries there in the future. The group is planning another trip in the fall of 2023. At our meeting on January 18th, we committed to financially support this worthwhile project in the amount of $2,500.
We also committed to support our partners at Lead with Seeds with a donation of $2,000.
Club Update:
The Guest Speaker at our January 18th meeting was Matt Mandrusiak from the Edmonton Community Foundation, who shared information about Donor Advised Funds. At our Executive Meeting on January 24th, we approved a recommendation to the club to establish an endowment fund, initially in the amount of $15,000. A motion to approve this recommendation will be brought forward at our February 1st meeting. If you have any questions about this opportunity, contact Jeanette or Maureen.
Also for discussion at our Business meeting on February 1st will be the results of the Strategic Planning Session held in September, To view the Strategic Planning Document from Sept 2021, click here. And to view the Summary Notes from Sept 2022, click here.

Communications Update
How can we tell our story? The communications team is working on a plan but we need your help. If you are working on a project or event or if you want to share your Rotary journey with others, we want to hear about it. And if you attend an event, take pictures or videos and send to RCEMstories@gmail.com. We will use these for social media and bulletin posts.
February is Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution Month. How does the work we do help to create peace?
